5 out of 5 stars Stop complaining, this is a good product   May 1, 2010

Several people complained on various internet review boards about how this camera does not deliver very high quality video, etc. I'm a technology enthusiast, computer specialist, amateur photographer and have about 7 or 8 different cameras - so I feel qualified to give a good review.
This is a camcorder meant for internet uploads/sharing, quick shots, etc. This is not what you want to film your wedding with. So don't expect broadcast quality.
Having said that I think the image quality is VERY good for its size. One huge advantage over Flip/etc... is the swiveling lens. This was the main attraction for me. I'm always embarassed waving a big camera in public. Just don't like when people stare at me for filming something. This is why Sony bloggie is a great product. You can turn the lens to an angle you like and hold the device like your cellphone. People will actually think you are just playing with your phone.
Let's get done with my complaints list quickly:
-CMOS sensor - means you get the rolling shutter a.k.a jello effect when panning too fast with the camera (vertical objects appear skewed)
-Smaller lens angle when using 1080p mode. (i.e. picture is too "tele")... you get a nicer wide angle if using 720p.

That's about it, image quality -especially in daylight- is very very good for such a camera. I actually prefer to record in 720p 60fps mode, the high frame rate gives it a very smooth motion.
FYI, it's compatible with Apple's iMovie. Will take some time to import your videos but once it's done, editing is super easy!

I hesitated for a long time before buying this camera but I'm glad to say I don't regret it at all! Very satisfied with my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Camera   May 16, 2010

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1DEKZ6TN3R3QT When I received the Bloggie I was not expecting anything great and my assumption was based mostly on the reviews I read here on Amazon. Well, I have got to say, "I was blown away by this camera"! I really love it! I was attracted to the Bloggie for various reasons. It has a slide out USB connector, a rotating lens system which not only protects the lens but this feature also gives the user different angles for holding the camera. The Bloggie also uses the standard .MP4 file format which is a whole bunch easier to work with for uploading and storing on your PC. The Bloggie also uses a standard SDHC card or you can use Sony's own memory stick. The Bloggie also has software built in so you can use it on any PC. The SDHC card you install can also function as a drive while it's loaded in the camera. The Bloggie also gives the user the option of using it's built in software to handle video files or you can simply use drag and drop file handling. If needed, file conversion from MP4 to FLV, WMV and other formats is a snap. The Bloggie's actual video recording format is-(MP4 H-264 AAC). The Bloggie is extremely versatile in every way. Something worth noting, Sony has a much better reputation when it comes to customer and technical support and that was another deciding factor for me. The Bloggie comes supplied with a USB extension cable, video and audio cables, software, hand-strap, manuals and Li-on battery.

As much as I dislike doing comparison reviews, I thought doing so might be important for someone looking to buy a new camera. Anyway, In addition to the Bloggie I also purchased the new Kodak Playsport. In Retrospect, I rated the Kodak Playsport 5 stars two weeks before I received the Bloggie. In comparison to the Kodak the Bloggie is a far better camera. The Bloggie's color rendition is richer and the video itself looks so much sharper than the Kodak. The Bloggie does not seem to have that annoying gelatin effect when you pan the camera wereas the Kodak gelatin effect is very pronounced. The battery in the Bloggie also lasts longer. I get about 1.5 hours recording time with the Kodak but the Bloggie has given me 6 hours thus far without a charge. I only purchased the Kodak to use outdoors during inclement weather. One of my hobbies is related to monitoring and recording severe storms and so the Kodak seemed fitting since it's waterproof, other then that, I'll be using the Bloggie full time. There are so many more reasons why I like the Bloggie, more-so than the Kodak but I'll spare you the long read.

I've read one star reviews were folks have complained about the Bloggie's audio being poor quality. Mine sounds great! I've also read one star reviews about folks not being able to see the display in bright sunlight, well I've never known of any product that can be viewed optimally in those conditions. There was another one star review concerning the software, it's not the software! Boy-O-Boy, The Sony Bloggie deserves a better review, it's just a great camera!

In a nutshell, I'll be recommending the Bloggie to my friends and family. The uploaded video was hot in 720/60 and I then converted the .MP4 to an .FLV using a freeware program. I hope it helps.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent and convenient video camera   March 10, 2010

I bought the Sony Bloggie from Amazon along with a high speed Sony Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo HX 8 GB Flash Memory Card with USB Reader MSHX8G for a 3 week trip to Bermuda. The camera is very compact so it was easy to carry in my pocket in an old cell phone case. It's actually smaller than an iPhone or a G1.

It was easy to quickly take a photo or a video. The built-in software also makes it simple to upload videos and photos to the Internet. There are several sites programmed into the software but I just used Picasa for photos and YouTube for videos.

I shot all my videos in 720p and was very pleased with the quality of the video and sound. I only took a dozen or so photos with the Bloggie but they were acceptable. It was so much fun and so easy to take videos that I didn't even think about taking photos.

The Bloggie is not without its drawbacks. A jack for an external microphone would have been a nice feature but I found the built-in mic to be fine. Oddly the most irritating thing about the Bloggie is sliding the USB connector back into the camera. I always felt like either it would never go back in or that it might break. The USB extender cord that comes with the Bloggie is about 6.5" long; a longer one would have been more convenient. The screen is way too reflective and washes out in daylight so an anti-glare screen protector will be my next purchase for this camera. Documentation, once you have set the camera up is pretty much non-existent, so it's a learning experience as you use the camera. The will be some shake to your videos if you aren't firmly holding the camera or not using a tripod but that is true of all video cameras regardless of size unless one has a Steadicam or other camera stabilizer.

My bottom line is I really love this camera. It met all of my expectations; not too cold, not too hot but just right. I highly recommend it and would buy it again without hesitation.

Addendum: Took it on a cruise to Mexico and, well CURSE swimsuits with large pockets! I hopped into a hot tub with it in my pocket on the last day of the cruise! The camera died BUT the good news is that the Sony memory card survived with all my videos intact. Whew!
Now considering purchasing the Sony MHS-CM5 bloggie HD Video Camera (Violet) NEWEST MODEL with the 5x optical as a replacement.

5 out of 5 stars works great   February 4, 2010

I originally purchased because i wanted a pocketable camcorder. i was also intrigued by sony's 360 degree mirror attachment. the bloggie takes great video, probably as good as my 3-year-old canon HV20. no optical zoom, but what can you expect from an inexpensive camera that easily fits in your pocket? because it is so small, i find it a bit difficult to hold and shoot video smoothly. it does have a standard 1/4-20 tripod socket, however. one could fabricate some kind of adapter to make it handle more smoothly, but that would defeat it's capability as a 'carry-always' device.

i haven't used the flip or kodak competing cameras, so i can't do a comparison. the UI for this camera is a bit clunky, but one quickly gets used to it. build quality is good, not great. i love being able to simple plug the camera into my computer, and pull the video files out. it's always a pain to try to capture video from my HV20. makes me want to purchase one of the new flash camcorders. playback on the tiny video screen is kind of useless. this camera worked fine on both my windows 7 and macbook machines. didn't install sony's software, so have no comment on that.

5 out of 5 stars Love it! Excellent video quality, and works well with 'Win Vista'!   April 25, 2010

I wanted to make a transition to HD video without 'breaking the bank', and came across the Sony 'Bloggie'. Primarily, I needed it to document the activities and growth of our beautiful 5 year old daughter. I am using it with the included 4 GB memory stick pro duo card at 720p, 30fps, and am getting about 2 hours of video, and battery life is surprisingly long. Video quality is quite nice, with deep, vibrant colors and amazing detail. One of two small gripes would be that this unit has a digital zoom, which is a bit 'choppy'. Sony needs to work on improving the fluidity of this digital zoom. In addition, it is difficult to view anything on the screen at times in typical bright sunlight, which is frustrating. I wish the screen were brighter. That said, transfering videos to your PC (at least in my case running Windows Vista) is effortless and lightning fast. These somewhat large size video files (all HD files will be relatively large) literally transfer to your PC in seconds, which is amazing. All in all, the 'Bloggie' is a good value, and an excellent way to get into super portable HD video. It's truly amazing that so much power can fit into such a small package. I can even get my MP4 HD videos to play flawlessly on my HP Mini 1035NR Win XP netbook, using 'Quicktime'.
