DCR DVD710 "Deluxe" Kit September 29, 2008 I bought the DCR-DVD710 "Deluxe" Kit to have a DVD camcorder so that my wife could send me video discs of my baby girl to me while I'm deployed to Iraq. The camera is great considering you can get it for around 350, with as good of quality as I expected at that price and being able to save on the memory stick with the hybrid capabilities means that not having a harddrive isn't a big deal especially since you can get pretty large memory sticks these days.
That being said I'm not judging the camera, that was satisfactory to me, what I AM judging is the "deluxe" accessories that it came with. The bag isn't more than a cloth grociery bag. It has like no pockets, so basically you just pile everything into the one big pouch and thats it. Thats deluxe? The extra long life battery it came with, wasn't the sony brand thats shown in the picture, its some off brand that doesn't have any kind of label on it, and when charged up and plugged into the camcorder, it said on the screen "this battery can not be used with this camcorder". Which I thought was funny, because it actually loaded up with the load screens and everything so obviously it was able to get power from the battery, my guess is that it wants you to use a name brand battery. So thats fine, I'll buy one, but why give me a "deluxe" package with a long lasting battery that doesnt' work? The lenses and filters are actually pretty nice.. though the telephoto lens is somewhat pointless because the camera has a pretty good zoom built into it. The wide angle lens is nice allowing for more in your picture. Though they seem to be pretty cheap, the lenses are fairily nice to have also and help with picture quality in different lighting conditions. The big tripod is pretty light and small which extends to a nice height, but is quite cheaply constructed and I doubt will last long under regular use. The kit came with a 2 GB "sony" mem duo card, which I'd prefer a 4 gb, but one thing I don't get is when I switch to record with the mem card, it says "camcorder may not be able to record properly with this memory card". Now, so far it seems to be recording fine, but seriously why does it say that when its a sony card? My guess is its not REALLY a sony card, and is some other kind of knock off, or its requiring the new faster mem stick duo card, with Magic Gate II technology to really be able to record fast enough to get the higher def video. But thats just speculation. The cleaning kit is pretty standard. The memory card reader should be alright and comes with a USB extension which is always a nice thing to have.
I'd suggest, for anyone wanting this camera with some accessories, to buy the camera seperate, and maybe pay a few extra dollars for a good accessory pack that will last you awhile. Maybe one with all name brand products.
Happy filming
